Cybercriminals only need a single vulnerability
Cybersecurity is a bit like the goalkeeper in a football team, isn’t it? When someone else in the team makes a mistake, there are 10 other players on the field to correct that mistake, including the goalkeeper. But once the goalkeeper makes a mistake, the likelihood of a goal by the opposing rockets to 100% unless the goalkeeper is extremely lucky and gets away with it.
This challenge is real and it is difficult to explain to anyone outside of IT and cybersecurity. There can be a 99.999% effectiveness in countering cyberattacks and yet the remaining 0.001% is what everyone is talking about because that is when the proverbial excrements hit the air refreshing equipment… And not without due reason. With an average of 1,000 attempted cyberattacks per day on the infrastructure of organizations, that 0.001% would mean almost 4 successful attacks per year!
It is an unfair fight, but nobody gets into Cybersecurity to put up a fair fight. Maybe it is even the challenge of cracking down on cybercriminals against the odds that attracts some of the top talents to the industry. Cybercriminals only need a single vulnerability, so let’s make sure they don’t get the one they need!
